Trekking around the massif

(6 days / 7 nights)

Starting in Arenas de Cabrales, this six day trekking circuit takes place around the massif. Without going to high mountain, we cross a variety of distinct landscapes of the Picos de Europa. By tracks and forest paths, our footsteps take us from deep gorges to ancient woods and hay fields with traditional "majadas", going through picturesque mountain villages.

During the walks, we only carry a small day backpack. A support vehicle transports the rest of our belongings between the locations.

Reminiscent of the way of life of our forebears, with a slow but constant rhythm, we enjoy the simple pleasure of walking through wild natural environments, under the gaze of wild chamois amongst hay fields carpeted with wild flowers.

Griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, Short-toed eagles, Ravens, Golden eagles, and many smaller birds, are our companions along the way.

We get to know dramatic landscapes, amongst rich and varied natural environments, delicious gastronomy and deep traditions.

Day 2 - Monday:   After a short car journey (30 miles) to the start of the circular walk, we leave from the picturesque village of Amieva, and walk around the whole of the high valley of the river Dobra, to the hay fields of  Vegabaño. Surrounded by deep forest, the place affords a fabulous view of the crests of the Cornion massif.

Spend the night in Vegabaño refuge (bunk beds in shared rooms)

Día 3 - Martes: Starting the day climbing the Dobres pass, we walk towards the Valdeón valley for the “Vega de Llos”. Groups of Chamois and vultures soaring above, acompany us along the way.

Spend the night in Cordiñanes de Valdeón hostal (double room with private bathroom).

Dia 4 - Wednesday: Leaving the Cornion and Valdeón valley behind, we enter the central part of the massif. By way of the Pedabejo pass, we discover Liébana and the area around Fuente Dé. Whilst walking through hay fields carpeted with wild flowers, there is a backdrop of panoramic views of the dramatic south of the Picos.

Spend the night in Espinama refuge (bunk beds in shared rooms)

Day 5 - Thursday: Crossing  the deep glacial valleys where the source of the Duje and Nevandi rivers emerge, the Áliva mountain pass directs us once again northwards. Visiting groups of traditional “majadas”, we are initiated into the ways and ancient traditions of mountain grazing pasture.

Spend the night in Sotres hostal (double room with private bathroom).

Day 6 - Friday: Today is dedicated to climbing Peña Main, crossing characteristic landscapes of the Picos de Europa. Although only of moderate height (5,250 feet), this natural vantage point affords a complete panoramic view of the high peaks of the Urrielles.

Spend the night in Tielve hostal (double room with private bathroom).

Day 7 - Saturday: The last day's walk returns us to Arenas de Cabrales, passing by Portudera. Going through a magnificent ancient Beech forest with mighty, twisted moss covered trees, murmuring springs and trickling streams meander amongst the undergrowth.
